Where to Find Free Pallets Near You

Practical guide to sourcing free timber pallets in Australia โ€” where to look, what to ask, and what to avoid.

๐Ÿ›’

Supermarkets & grocery stores

Produce and grocery stores receive constant pallet deliveries. Ask the receiving dock manager. Avoid CHEP (blue) and LOSCAM (red) โ€” these are hire pallets and not theirs to give.

๐Ÿ”จ

Hardware & home improvement stores

Bunnings and independent hardware stores receive large pallet volumes. Best to ask early morning before pallets are collected or compacted.

๐Ÿ“ฆ

Furniture & appliance stores

Large furniture items arrive on heavy-duty pallets. Ask the store manager โ€” mostly surplus to them.

๐ŸŒฟ

Garden centres & nurseries

Soil, fertiliser and pots arrive on pallets. Often give away for free, especially at end of day.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ

Industrial estates & warehouses

Drive through industrial areas โ€” pallets are sometimes stacked outside with a 'free' sign. Ask first if unsure.

๐Ÿ“ฑ

Facebook Marketplace & Gumtree

Search 'free pallets' in your area. Many businesses list them rather than arrange disposal. Act fast as they go quickly.

What to Avoid

  • โœ— Blue pallets (CHEP) โ€” property of CHEP/Brambles. Taking them is theft.
  • โœ— Red pallets (LOSCAM) โ€” same issue. Hire pallets belong to the pool operator.
  • โœ— Pallets marked MB (methyl bromide treated) โ€” banned in most countries, not safe for indoor use.
  • โœ— Pallets marked with chemicals or with staining of unknown origin.
  • โœ— Pallets with broken boards, protruding nails or structural damage.

Is it safe to use free pallets indoors?

Only use pallets marked HT (heat treated) indoors. HT pallets are treated with heat rather than chemicals, making them safe for furniture, garden beds and home use. Avoid any pallet marked MB (methyl bromide) or with unknown staining.

The IPPC mark shows treatment method: look for "HT" next to the wheat sheaf logo on the pallet's side stringer.

Want to buy quality pallets affordably?

PalletFinder lists Grade B/C pallets from recyclers across Australia โ€” often $5โ€“$15 each with delivery.
