Export Pallets & ISPM 15 Compliance

Everything Australian exporters need to know about heat-treated pallets and ISPM 15 biosecurity requirements.

⚠️

Mandatory for most exports from Australia

Timber pallets used in international shipping must carry the ISPM 15 mark (HT treatment). Failure to comply can result in goods being rejected, fumigated at your expense, or destroyed at the border.

What is ISPM 15?

ISPM 15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15) is the international standard that governs wood packaging material used in trade. It was developed to prevent the spread of invasive insects and plant diseases across borders through wooden packaging.

The standard requires that all timber pallets, crates and dunnage used in international shipping be treated to eliminate pests. In Australia, the accepted methods are heat treatment (HT) and methyl bromide fumigation (MB) — though MB is being phased out globally.

The ISPM 15 HT Mark Explained

Compliant pallets carry a branded mark with: AU (country code), a registered producer number, HT (heat treatment) or MB (methyl bromide), and the IPPC wheat symbol. This mark must be permanently branded (not painted or stickered) on at least two opposing sides of the pallet.

Heat Treatment Requirements

For HT certification, the timber core temperature must reach 56°C for a minimum of 30 continuous minutes. Treatment must be performed by an accredited provider and documented with a thermal profile log.

Getting ISPM 15 Certified Pallets in Australia

Most reputable timber pallet manufacturers in Australia offer ISPM 15 certified pallets. Look for the HT mark already branded on the pallet when purchasing. Some recycled/refurbished pallet suppliers also offer re-treatment and re-marking services.

Plastic pallets are exempt from ISPM 15 as they pose no biological risk.
